Age UK Lambeth is a registered charity and has been working in Lambeth for over 60 years as the leading voluntary sector provider of services to older people.
Our purpose is shaped by our charity objectives:
- advancing education;
- preventing or relieving sickness, disease or suffering (whether emotional, mental or physical);
- promoting equality and diversity;
- assisting older people in need by reason of ill-health, disability, financial hardship, social exclusion or other disadvantage; and
- such other charitable purposes for the benefit of older people as the trustees may from time to time decide.
Information and Advice service
We reached 3,537 people last year through our Enquiry Line Service (weekdays 9am – 5pm). We hold regular information and advice drop-in sessions at various locations around Lambeth (no appointment required). Appointments and home visits can also be arranged with advisers to explore more complex situations. We assist with welfare benefits claims, housing issues, community care, financial management and tax, utilities, consumer issues, tradespeople and services, transport, debt and social and leisure activities.
Our Befriending Service is for older people who may feel socially isolated and lonely. Our main target client group are the 9,800 (40%) Lambeth residents aged over 65 who live alone. We match each individual applicant with a suitable volunteer who visits their home for at least one hour a week to keep them company and have a chat.
Our Handyperson Service carried out 1,980 jobs around the borough in 2014-15 in the categories of small repairs, home safety, energy efficiency, minor aids and adaptations, hospital discharge and home security. We provide a lock fitting and burglary prevention service which has been a huge success.
Carers Welfare Advice
We offer benefits advice to carers. Carers look after someone who is ill, frail or has a disability and could not manage on their own. In 2014-15 our specialist adviser helped local carers claim £909,253 in benefits. Our information and advice is free, independent and confidential.
Vida Walsh Centre
The Vida Walsh Centre in Brixton provides a range of activities and support for older people including arts and crafts, baking, zumba, computer classes, lunch clubs, massage, seated exercise, tech workshops, yoga and sing-a-long. A regular ‘Out and About’ group visits London landmarks. A ‘Yak and Yarn’ knitting group meets at the Hetherington Group Practice in Clapham and a drawing class at Holland Grove Housing Scheme in Stockwell.
Safe and Independent Living (SAIL)
SAIL provides a quick and simple way to access a wide range of local services which support older people in maintaining their independence, safety and wellbeing. It is a co-operative multi-agency referral scheme, where organisations and individuals working in the community can help people with problems outside their area of responsibility. SAIL support includes occupational therapy, falls prevention, debt management, personal safety, mobility and protection from scams and rogue traders.
